Volkswagen Passat (96 - 01)
Volkswagen are masters at improving cars from one generation to the next. This model of the Passat is a huge improvement over its predecessor in more ways than one. It looks better, the build quality is stronger and it is more efficient. It says a lot about the car that even to this day it still doesn’t look too dated and it is still sought after. That’s why it continues to sell well in the used car market. The cabin is nicely worked, even though it isn’t too dissimilar to other Volkswagens, everything is right at your fingertips and is easy to use. The quality of the materials used may not feel high-end but they are hard-wearing and robust. In terms of driving, like the outgoing model, it handles well, and the ride quality is smooth and the steering is nicely weighted and decisive. For a car of its size it is surprisingly easy to manoeuvre in tight places. There are some great engines and they are all quite efficient and impressively economical.
Look out for
• Reports of water leakage through the front door seals

• Very spacious interior, can comfortably seat five
• The ride quality is very smooth and the handling is really goof
• Interior is well-built, everything looks and feels rock-solid and robust
• As well as a great performance, it is good on juice
What we don't like
• There can be a lot of wind noise in the cabin when driving at high speeds
