Ford Ranger (00 - 11)
It’s less expensive than most other pickup trucks in its class and a lot more practical. Not only is it a good drive on tarmac it handles pretty well off-road too. The steering is precise and weighted (although it can feel a bit heavy at times) and the ride quality is good. In terms of space, it depends on what model you go for: there is a two-seater cabin, a five-seater two-door and a five-seater four door. There is a huge amount of storage space on the back. The centre console looks really well and there is plenty of standard kit. The only downside is that some of the trims feel a bit inexpensive. When it comes to picking your engine, there isn’t a huge selection. The 3.0-litre V6 is the most powerful, churning out 148bhp and 180nm of torque.

• The transmission can get damaged if over-used off-road

• The cabin is nicely built and has good levels of standard kit
• It is reasonably priced and practical
