Ford Puma (97 - 02)
It was part of the ‘New Edge’ idea. This was where Ford targeted younger drivers with cars that had edgy, sporty looks, strong lines and nimble chassis. These are all to be seen in the likes of the Ka, Mondeo, Focus, and the Cougar. The Puma shares its underpinnings and major components with the Fiesta, so it is no surprise that it is quick, handles well and is fun to drive. The cabin is nicely assembled but there is limited space in the back. However, if you’re not using the back seats you can fold them down to add to boot space. There are three engines: the 1.4, 1.6, and the 1.7. All are excellent but from a performance perspective the 1.7-litre would be the front runner. It pushes out 152bhp, 162nm of torque, has a top speed of 126mph and goes from 0-60 in 7.9 seconds. Fuel economy is a modest 34mpg.

• The suspension bushes have been known to wear quickly

• It is a fun car to drive; handles well

• There is limited space in the rear of the cabin
