Hyundai Tucson (04 - 09)
This is one of the best value-for-money 4x4s. As well as being inexpensive to buy, it doesn’t cost much to run and is a decent looking car inside and out. The interior is roomy, comfortable, and can easily carry five and their luggage. There’s plenty of standard equipment including; Isofix child seat anchors, heated seats, cruise control, a trip computer, and plenty more. Behind the wheel, it handles really well; the driving position is excellent, and the ride quality is fairly decent. It performs at its best on the tarmac but is also capable of some mild off-roading. There are three engines; a 2.0-litre diesel, a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.7-litre V6, pushing out 148bhp, 139bhp, and 173bhp respectively. Each engine is also good on fuel economy and are efficient in terms of CO2 emissions
Look out for
• Check that the car has no underlying problems. Ideally it will have a full service history

• There’s a generous level of standard equipment
• The Tucson performs well off-road as well as on tarmac
• It handles really well on corners
• Ride quality is particularly smooth on the tarmac
• There’s plenty of space in the cabin for five
• It doesn’t cost as much as its rivals to buy and run
• There’s a good diesel option as well as the petrol
What we don't like
• The interior trims and plastics look and feel quite inexpensive
• The suspension can be a little firm on corners
