Peugeot 208 (12 - present)
Despite having a lot to live up to with its formidable predecessors in the 205, 206 and 207, the 208 has managed to establish itself as one of the best small hatches in the business. The superb engines, excellent chassis, and crouched good looks make it a very attractive option in what has become a fiercely competitive segment. It's a practical choice too, with plenty of room in the cabin, and the boot is one of the largest in the class. As always with Peugeot, there’s a generous level of standard kit and safety equipment, and a new range of colour and personalisation options on the newer models adds to its young and energetic image. An excellent range of fuel-efficient engines and a relaxed, easy drive complete a very impressive little package.
